On March 20, 23 players converged upon Mingles in Moscow, Idaho for the
McDERMOTT tour stop. This 8-ball, $500 added double-elimination event
was played on 4.5 X 9 ft Brunswick Medalist tables covered with 860
Simonis and kept clean with Quick Clean. Play started at 11 am and
ended at 11pm. At 6pm Mingles held a drawing for a $250 McDERMOTT cue.
This was won by Dave Lunsford who finished 7th in the tournament. In
round 3 Tony Waters ran into trouble playing Soud. After a hard fought
battle of wits and safeties, Tony lost 5 – 3. Meanwhile, on the
winner’s side, Clay Belvoir was shooting quietly and aggressively.
While he struggled in his first match down 3-0, he won the next 5 games
in a row, and never looked back. In the end, Tony came back through the
losers’ side to play Clay and lost 5-3.
The youngest entry was Doug Nash, age 16, son of Marvin Nash – 3-time
Idaho state champion. Doug didn’t finish in the money but he did a
great job getting out of tight spots.
RESULTS
1st Clay Belvoir - $470
2nd Tony Waters - $300
3rd Jim Todd - $240
4th Soud - $120
5th Marvin Nash - $60
A special thanks to Skyler for the room, the tables, the donuts and
coffee. A special, special, thanks to Jim Todd, the tournament
director who ran this tourney similar to Buddy Hall’s stroke, and his
assistant, “corner market Bob”.
