On December 13th and 14th, Harvey's Billiards in Renton, Washington held the December
McDermott 9 Ball Tour Tournament co-sponsored by The Break and McDermott Cues. 47 out
of the 48 entrants that were signed up for the tournament showed up to do battle on the
thirteen 9 foot tables used for this tournament.
Mr. Harvey was extremely impressed by the attitude and professionalism of all of the
players. The tournament went off with out any problems. Bert Harvey did institute a
rule that kept the players on time. For every 10 minutes you were late for a match you
lost one game. This rule only got used during the first matches and was not needed
again. There was also no smoking permitted during the entire tournament. The first
day went smoothly with the matches starting at 9a.m. and finishing by 4 p.m. leaving the
top 12 finishers to play the next day for all the cash.
There were a few upsets the first day of play, but that can happen in the game of 9
ball with a race to 7 games. A vote was taken and the majority increased the matches
by one game, 8 games on the winners side and 6 games on the losers side. The second day
matches kicked off at noon with the losers side Randy C playing Al Porez and beating
him 6 to 4. John Plunkett playing Ben Ramsey spanking him 6 to 1. John Doherty "JD"
playing Eddie Mataya winning 6 to 4 and last but not least Larry Carter "LC" schools
Craig Dumo 6 to 2.
Now for the winners side! Dan Louie plays Doug Enera and it comes down to a nail biter
with Dan winning 8 to 7. Next was Mike Zimmerman playing Robert Colby and it was yet
another nail biter with Robert coming out on top 8 to 7. With only eight players
remaining John Plunkett beats Randy 6 to 2. John played some solid matches. Then JD
beats LC 6 to 4 this too was a well played match.
All remaining six players had a good chance to win the tournament. John now plays Doug
and wins handily 6 to 1. Mike beats JD 6 to 4. And then Mike plays John and wins 6 to 4.
With three players left we get to see who will get to the point. It's Dan Louie playing
Robert Colby. Dan wins 8 to 4. Now the re-match was on between Mike Z and Robert C. It
was one of the craziest matches of the tournament with ups and downs the whole match,
but in the end Robert hung in there and won 6 to 5 on a played wonder shot. He went for
it and won it.
With a 10 minute recess the finals started in a one race to 11 games. Dan Louie jumped
out to a big lead at 3 to 0 before Robert Colby could make it 3 to 1. Dan basically
controlled the match after that and beat Robert 11 to 7.
With 47 players the entries totaled $1,880 and Bert Harvey added $1,000. Total purse
was $2,888. We would also like to thank the 4 women that joined the tournament, Linda,
Patty, Julie and Heather, with Heather Doherty taking $80.00 for being the high woman
of the tournament. Very nice shooting ladies.
