The site for the 22nd Annual M.C.M.O.A. 8-Ball Championships, the
field consisted of over 360 players divided into four different
divisions, Men's A, B, Women's A and B. This is the first time that
it was held in Lewistown at the Yogo Inn. Lewistown is the
geographical center of Montana. Being the geographical center
players came from all corners, Libby, Missoula, Bozeman, Helena,
Great Falls, east from Glendive, Miles City, Billings and Winifred.
The Ladies A Division came down to the semi-finals with Jane Plant
who has won this tournament twice (1989, 2000) and Janet Dunks who
has won it once in the A Division (1999) and once in the B
Division (1992). Janet ended coming out the victor and Jane took
3rd. Janet then went up against Sky Tigart who had won the
tournament once (1996) before and had been shooting very well all
throughout the tournament. She was on the point and made quick work
and won it in the first set and was crowned once again Women's A
Champion.
In Women's B, a young lady, Shirstie Schmidgall, out of Missoula,
going to the University of Montana, originally from the north
Seattle area, came into the final match against Loreen Carey of
Bozeman. Loreen plays in the local leagues in the Bozeman area on a
Women's team and also in the Open League. Loreen shot well and had
to be beat twice. She lost the first set in a closely contested
match and went on to the second set where Shirstie came out the
victor, to become the Women's Champion in the B Division.
The B Division for the Men was a tight match again. Dave Brewer of
Bozeman, also playing in the Open VNEA Leagues. Dave was on the
point and had to be beat twice. He was pitted against Joe Palm
from Malta and Joe ended up winning the first set. Now going into
the final set Dave jumped out to an early lead 2-0, only needing
one more game. Dave broke ran down to the 8-ball and hooked himself.
He kicked at the 8-ball, hit it but did not make it in the pocket.
Joe ran down, had a combination into the corner pocket, made the
13-ball that he called but scratched in the side, therefore giving
Dave ball-in-hand on the 8-ball. Joe conceded without letting Dave
shoot. So the Men's Champion on the B-side was Dave Brewer from
Bozeman.
On the Men's A-side the final match pitted six time Champion
Jerry Kohm against Woody Roberts of Winifred, who had been beat
by Jerry earlier in the day to go to the losers bracket and
fought his way back through, beating Jason Tigart of Great Falls
to face Jerry in the finals. The shooting was excellent on both
sides, came up to a hill-hill match with Woody winning the final
game. Now going into the second set Jerry jumped out with
back-to-back wins. Woody breaks, a powerful snap into the break,
four balls are pocketed and so is the cue ball. Jerry takes
ball-in-hand runs the table and claims his seventh title!
Congratulations to all the players on their sportsmanship, their
honor and their pool etiquette.
The M.C.M.O.A. sponsored the 22nd 8-Ball Championship and on a
personal note I was glad to see a lot of my friends that I haven't
seen for a couple, three years and at least some that I hadn't
seen for a year or that I only seem to see at this tournament.
You can find the results also on OnTheBreakNews.com.
Now for probably the most unusual turn of events of the tournament.
Something that is rather difficult to believe but humorous in the
same way. The first player is on the 8-ball with an extremely
difficult cut into the corner pocket. The 8-ball hangs up in
the corner pocket as the cue ball travels to a rail and into
the center of the table. The second player picks up the cue
ball and calls a foul, while saying, "You didn't patch your
pocket." The first player informs him it is not a foul to not
patch the pocket you intend the 8-ball to go into as long as
you make a legal hit, but picking up the cue ball is --- so
"Foul on you." The first player takes the cue ball, places it
on the table and shoots the 8-ball into the pocket he had first
intended. Game over. The second player never realizes that now
the first player has fouled by pocketing the 8-ball and not
patching the pocket. Although he never realized it, they both
discussed patching the pocket just a few short moments ago.
