Record-Breaking 14th Appearance for Scorpion

MATCHROOM SPORT are pleased to announce that Johnny Archer is the first member of Team USA for the forthcoming Mosconi Cup which takes place at the York Hall, East London from 9th to 12th December 2010.

Archer, 41, will be making his 14th appearance in the competition, a record for an American player and matched only by European stalwarts Ralf Souquet and Mika Immonen should they be selected for December’s event.

The Georgian is currently ranked No.1 on the BCA Points List and with the US Open the sole counting event for Mosconi Cup selections, Archer is in an unassailable position.

“It’s an honour to be selected for the Mosconi Cup again,” said a delighted Archer who was elected to the Hall of Fame this time last year.

“I am so pleased that I can’t put it into words. After being on two losing teams in a row, winning last year was the best experience I have ever had at the Mosconi Cup.

Archer was a crucial part of a strong side that emerged 11-7 victors over Europe at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas last December.

“I am so excited to be representing USA at, for me, the birthplace of the Mosconi Cup, the York Hall.

“This is my 14th straight appearance at the Mosconi Cup and hopefully I can draw on my experience for a good showing,” he added.

Archer made his Mosconi Cup debut at the York Hall in 1997, the first year the competition was staged at the iconic East London venue. He carries an enviable record of 33 points won from 63 matches and was part of the successful side in Las Vegas last year.

Taking place at East London’s famous York Hall, following an eight year absence, the Mosconi Cup features two five man teams representing Europe and the USA competing over four days from Thursday 9th to Sunday 12th December.

The remaining four Team USA spots will be announced in October with the No.2 ranked player after the US Open, guaranteed a berth on the side.

MVP Dennis is Back for Team USA

Hatchetman Set for York Hall Mayhem!

DENNIS HATCH, the people’s champion who contributed so much to Team USA’s magnificent victory in Las Vegas last December, is today named as the second member of the American 2010 Mosconi Cup side.

Hatch, 39, who hails from Buffalo, New York, took the final spot on last year’s team after winning the internet fans vote from seven other players. ‘The Hatchetman’ went on to win four of his five matches, including two crucial singles match-ups against Niels Feijen, as the USA romped to an 11-7 win, their first victory in the ongoing series since 2005.

That earned Hatch the MVP trophy, but it was his fierce, emotion-charged team spirit that won the hearts of American pool fans.

“Words can’t explain how excited I am, this is going to be awesome and I can’t wait,” said a delighted Hatch.

“I can’t wait to be playing in London at York Hall and it will be an experience I will never forget.  The more stress and the more intimidating the atmosphere, the more I concentrate and grind. I will let nothing bother me and the madder I get the more I want to win!

Hatch, revealed how much his debut Mosconi Cup meant to him; “Last year was an unforgettable experience. To win the Cup and the MVP as a rookie was an unbelievable accomplishment.

“I’m looking at the MVP Trophy now and I still can’t believe it. I still watch the Mosconi Cup DVDs all the time.

“I loved playing in the event last year. You really bond with your teammates and come together and help each other with anything and everything. I believe we can win it again and it looks like we are going to have an awesome team again!” he added.

Taking place at East London’s famous York Hall, following an eight year absence, the Mosconi Cup features two five man teams representing Europe and the USA competing over four days from Thursday 9th to Sunday 12th December.

The remaining three Team USA spots will be announced in October with the No.2 ranked player on the BCA Points List after the US Open, guaranteed a berth on the side.

Europe Sends for Souquet

Kaiser Returns for 14th Appearance

HAVING MADE his Mosconi Cup debut in the inaugural 1994 event, Germany’s Ralf Souquet returns to the fray for Team Europe as they attempt to win back the most coveted trophy in pool.

It will be Souquet’s 14th appearance in the 17 year history of the Trans-Atlantic billiards tussle – a record he will be sharing with Johnny Archer of the USA. ‘The Kaiser’ has a record of 39 wins from 65 matches; an all-time Mosconi Cup record equalled only by Earl Strickland.

The 1996 World Champion and 2006 US Open winner, has been on the winning side three times – ’02, ’07 and ’08 and he will be keen to repeat his feat of 2007 when he downed the winning 9 ball in Las Vegas.

Souquet is a veteran of the York Hall though, having played there on all six occasions the Mosconi Cup has been staged in the historic London venue.

“I am absolutely overwhelmed by the fact that the Mosconi Cup will be back at the York Hall,” said Souquet.

“It has been such a great and unique atmosphere in the past there and I am really looking forward to a crazy and outstanding London crowd

“The Mosconi Cup win in 2002 is still a good memory because it was my first win over Team USA, even though I had match point for Europe and couldn’t bring it over the finish line.

“We had a great team spirit back then and when Steve Davis made the final ball to secure the Cup for Europe, the crowd went crazy. It almost felt like being in a football stadium after the home team just won the World Cup!

“I hope that the crowd will be as enthusiastic as they were in the past. The English fans will make it hard for Team USA but I have to admit that they have dealt with it quite well in the past.

Souquet is conscious of the fact that the Europeans have established themselves as serious Mosconi Cup contenders in recent years, but will enter the 2010 event as challengers.

“Last year’s defeat was felt bad by every European player and fan. We came in as favourites but couldn’t deal with it because we didn’t have a good enough team spirit.

“The motivation this year will be as high as every year and I am sure that captain Johan Ruijsink will do his best to bring the team spirit to the next level. Our goal can only be to bring the Cup back to Europe.

The Kaiser, who won the World 8 Ball Championship in 2008, is adamant that victory is a realistic prospect.

“I think there is no doubt that Europe can win the Mosconi Cup 2010. We just need to keep up the good work from the past 3 to 4 years in most of the individual events.

“I think for the first time in many years the odds are about even but with the right team play and spirit we will please our European fans with a victory!”

Taking place at East London’s famous York Hall, following an eight year absence, the Mosconi Cup features two five man teams representing Europe and the USA competing over four days from Thursday 9th to Sunday 12th December.

The remaining three Team Europe spots will be announced in October.

Women at the World Cup of Pool

WPBA Players Proudly Represent Respective Countries
in World Cup of Pool

The WPBA congratulates exempt WPBA pro’s selected to compete in the 2010 World Cup of Pool. The competition will be held in Manila, Philippines at the Midtown Wing of Robinsons Place in Ermita, Manila from Tuesday, September 7th to Sunday, September 12th and will feature 32 teams (2) person teams, representing 31countries.
Women’s Professional Billiards Association superstars Ga Young Kim, Yu Ram Cha, and Jasmin Ouschan are set to compete against the best of the best in male competition.  Top male professionals include Johnny Archer, Daryl Peach, Rodney Morris, Dennis Orcollo, Niels Feijen, Mika Immonen, Oliver Ortmann, Karl Boyes, Fu Jianbo, Tony Drago and Marcus Chamat who will all be firing at a $250,000 prize fund.
Kim and Cha will make up the only “all female” team. These two heavy hitters pack a lot of firepower and routinely take on and take down some of the toughest male competition around.  Cha has proven herself to be a more than worthy opponent when pitted against her male counterparts.   She has career wins over Shane VanBoening, Thorsten Hohmann, and her own coach, Charlie Williams, just to name a few.  When asked about how she feels about being part of the only all female team, Yu Ram responded, “As the only “all female” team, I feel a small burden to play well. I guess I will learn from the world’s best players!” When asked about her feelings going into the event and her new teammate, Yu Ram responds, “I am very excited and I can’t wait to play. I missed not participating in this event last year due to circumstances beyond my control. I will do my best in upcoming matches with my partner, Ga Young. She is a veteran and has more experience than me. She and I have never played together so I am a little bit worried. On the other hand, I am very excited to play with her. Due to the importance of teamwork, I am trying to harmonize with her.” Kim and Cha will be up against team Italy, Bruno Muratore and Fabio Patroni,  in the first round.

In addition, Austrian native Jasmin Ouschan will also join the mix.  Ouschan, who is no stranger to the toughest of competition, finished 3rd in the World Straight Pool Championships where she defeated the #1 seed, Mika Immonen and top German pro, Oliver Ortmann on her way to the semi-finals. “It is an honor again to be selected to play in the World Cup of Pool. This year will be my third time and the best result was the fifth place in 2008. This year I am playing with a young upcoming player from Austria and I hope we can beat the fifth place from 2008. It is a tough event especially since there is no losers’ round but we are strong together and I hope we can show it in Manila‚” explained Ouschan. She will pair up with Mario He in this 32 team format and will face off with Holland’s Neils Fejien and Huidji See in the first round.

Event sponsor Luke Riches of Matchroom Sport says, “We always enjoy having female players in the World Cup of Pool and will endeavour to include more as the standards rise. The ladies bring a different dimension to the tournament and they can play!”
